E-NOTICE from the STUDENT SERVICES DEPARTMENT

Early Childhood Community Peer Program

As a District 103 family, we want to share some information with you about a program for younger children, our Early Childhood (EC) Community Peer classes. Four of our EC classes at Sprague School are blended classrooms (two morning sections, and two afternoon sections). In a blended classroom, approximately half of the students have identified special education needs, and half of the students are community peers.

This model allows our students with identified needs to have a broader friendship and language model peer group, and it provides community peers the opportunity to participate in a Pre-Kindergarten program integrated into Sprague School (with participation in speech/language, social skills and occupational therapy activities in small and large groups).

If you have a younger child who could benefit from such a program, or you know of another District 103 resident with such a young child, please consider the following:

  • Community peers must be 3 or 4 years old by September 1, 2017.
  • The EC Community Peer classes are held at Sprague School, Monday-Friday.
    * * Morning classes are 8:30 a.m.-11:00 a.m.
    * * Afternoon classes are 12:00 p.m.-2:30 p.m.
  • Community peers have age-appropriate social and language skills as determined by the Ages and Stages-3 parent questionnaire. An observation during an EC classroom visit would also be required.

EC Community Peer Program Cost & Transportation:

  • Parents/Guardians pay tuition of $2,958 for the 2017-2018 school year.
  • Parents/Guardians provide transportation for their child, as community peers do not receive bus transportation to/from the school.

Please contact our Student Services Department with any questions or to express interest in this program: Mary Burks at mburks@d103.org. Additional materials can be found on our webpage at www.d103.org/earlychildhood.

Thank you!
