Change in Construction Timeline
Dear District 103 Community,
Due to unanticipated challenges in the bidding process for our upcoming construction project, we are deferring the start of this important project by one year. As a result, 5th grade will remain at Daniel Wright for the 2016-2017 school year.
We are fully committed to completing the project next summer, with 5th grade at Half Day School beginning with the 2017-2018 school year. Below are a few key questions and answers regarding this very important and impactful decision.
- This decision is in the best interests of our students. Our architectural firm missed a critical deadline in the bidding process, causing the project timeline to extend by at least a month into the 2016-2017 school year. This would have a negative impact on student learning. Further, this past Friday, we received bids that came in significantly higher than anticipated due to a very aggressive construction timeline. This would result in unnecessary financial strain on the district by exceeding the construction budget.
- The 2016-2017 School Calendar - the Board of Education recently approved a calendar for next year that began the school year on September 6, 2016. This late start to the year maximized the number of days during summer break in order to complete the construction project. Given the change in project timing, we now need to maximize construction days the following summer. Accordingly, we are updating the 2016-2017 calendar to begin the school year at least one week earlier (prior to Labor Day). A revised version of the 2016-2017 and a preliminary 2017-2018 calendar will be developed and distributed shortly.
- Summer School - summer school for 2016 will continue at Deerfield District 109 to honor our commitment to D109 and would cause issues with a very short timeline to try and switch the program to District 103. A decision for the 2017 summer school program will be made in the fall.
The new construction schedule will ensure that we have ample time to renovate our buildings while capitalizing on a more favorable bidding environment. Delaying the 5th grade move to Half Day School until the 2017-2018 year will provide the best option to ensure our students have an optimal learning environment.
Thank you for your understanding with this change in the construction timeline. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
