Standards-Based Grading

Standards-based grading communicates how students are performing on a set of clearly defined learning targets called standards.

  • The purpose of standards-based grading is to identify what a student knows, or is able to do, in relation to pre-established learning targets, as opposed to simply averaging grades/scores over the course of a grading period, which can mask what a student has learned, or not learned, in a specific course.
  • Essentially, standards-based grading provides meaningful, actionable feedback that helps students take ownership over their own learning.

District 103 uses standards-based grading to communicate academic progress for students in grades K-4. During the 2016-2017 school year, this model is also being used in grade 5. By 2018-2019 it is the goal of the district to implement standards-based grading K-8.
