State Champs!

State Champs: It was a season filled with unprecedented challenges, but that did not stop the Daniel Wright Science Olympiad team from winning their 10th consecutive State Championship! The team will join the Science and Arts Academy to represent Illinois at the virtual National Tournament being held in Phoenix, Arizona, on May 22.

The following 15 students competed at State and will represent District 103 at Nationals: Timothy Bui (8th), Surya Chandrakasan (8th), Ian Chung (7th), Nikhil Gangavarapu (8th), Angela Ho (7th), Vedanti Joshi (8th), Tej Kosaraju (8th), Lucas Niu (7th), Anusha Saraf (7th), Aaroh Tak (8th), Jonatha Tao (8th), Richard Xu (7th), Kevin Yang (8th), Mark Yang (8th), and Audrey Yin (8th).

Individual medals won included three 3rd place, four 2nd place, and fifteen 1st place. The varsity team consists of 15 students in grades 6-8. The team is coached by Eric Rexer and Lisa Solesky, with the assistance of dedicated and supportive parent volunteer event coaches. The team would like to thank the D103 administration for their support through this very challenging season. GO WARRIORS!

 
Regionals: The Daniel Wright Science Olympiad team ended their regular season by sweeping the Regionals Competition on March 6, 2021, with both the varsity and junior varsity teams winning first place.  Individual medals won included nine second place medals and thirty-four first place medals.  The 32-person team consisting of students in grades 6-8 will be pared down to one team of 15 students who will represent Daniel Wright at the State competition next month.   The top two teams at State will advance to Nationals in May.

The team is coached by Eric Rexer and Lisa Solesky, with the assistance of volunteer parent event coaches.

Badger Invitationl: The Daniel Wright Science Olympiad team took home first and third place trophies at the sixth annual Badger Invitational in Madison, Wisconsin on Feb. 27.  Twenty-nine schools consisting of 56 teams from across the country virtually competed in 23 events (including trial events). Individual medals won by DW students included twelve first place, seven second place, five third place, five fourth place, two fifth place, four sixth place, and one eighth place. The team consists of 32 students in grades 6-8. They are coached by Eric Rexer and Lisa Solesky with the assistance of parent volunteer event coaches.  Coach Rexer and Coach Solesky would like to acknowledge their appreciation for the support our parent volunteers give the team. They consider them the "third members" of the team.  The team's next challenge will be when they compete virtually at Regionals on March 6.

Kennedy Invitational: The Daniel Wright Science Olympiad team took fifth place at the virtual Kennedy Invitational, hosted by Cupertino, California on Feb. 13. The invitational consisted of 85 teams from 17 states with a total of 1,188 students competing in 26 events, including 4 trial events. Individual medals earned by DW's team included two 10th place, two eighth-place, four seventh-place, two sixth-place, three fourth-place, one third-place, two second-place, and two first-place. The team consists of 32 students in grades 6-8. They are coached by Eric Rexer and Lisa Solesky with the assistance of volunteer parent event coaches.  The team's next challenge will be the Badger Invitational, Madison, Wisconsin on Feb. 27.

Westlake Invitational: The DW Science Olympiad Team competed on Saturday, Jan. 9 in the Westlake, Ohio Invitational. Thirty-two Division B teams competed against each other with Daniel Wright placing third overall and placing first in the Super Rank. Individual team medals earned included five 1st place, four 2nd place, five 3rd place, four 4th place, five 5th place, five 6th place, four 7th place, and three 8th place. The team is comprised of 32 students in grades 6-8. They are coached by Eric Rexer and Lisa Solesky, as well as parent volunteer event coaches. They compete virtually next at the Kennedy Middle School Invite in Cupertino, California on February 13.
