Celebrating Spanish Culture
Sprague students in second-grade participate in Spanish classes weekly with exposure to World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages — communication, cultures, connections, comparisons and community. This spring, Spanish teachers engaged students in the Las Fallas festival celebration originating from Valencia, Spain. Las Fallas is celebrated annually in March. To celebrate the festival, students collaboratively created tissue paper sculptures with toilet paper tubes and assorted building materials. Staff and students then did an entire grade level vote to choose their favorite falla. Students were actively engaged in inquiry learning to promote a greater understanding of this cultural celebration, explained Spanish teachers Michelle Heath and Janet Travetto. Please visit the school's Google Doc folder for pictures of students working on their projects.
