Goal 2:

Optimize our District spaces (and plan for current and future space needs) to promote creativity, collaboration and analytical thinking.

District 103’s Strategic Plan, Vision 2020, outlines the need to optimize the teaching and learning spaces in the District to promote 21st Century skills. Specifically, the goals state:

  • Work with an architect to optimize student learning spaces.
  • Work with an architect to optimize staff work spaces.
  • Explore the reconfiguration of grade levels for district schools.

For the past three years, the District has been reviewing the facility needs in the District. With rising enrollment, program increases from federal and state mandates, and District initiatives, the need for the optimization and addition of space has become evident. We are addressing the space challenges in the district through careful, thoughtful and engaged planning. We are working with our community as we prepare our facilities for the future . . . to optimize student learning through flexible, sustainable spaces that support 21st Century teaching and learning.

In the spring of 2015, the Board, staff and community members began meeting to address this need. The groups met through the summer to create a draft plan of how to address the space issues in the District. The District is working with an architectual firm, Wight and Co., to help us achieve this goal.

  • Facility Improvement Planning
    • On September 1, 2015, the draft plan was presented to the Board of Education for review.
    • At the Board meeting on September 15, 2015, the Board approved moving forward with the next phase of planning for facility improvements:
      • Additions to Half Day School and Laura B. Sprague School; and
      • Moving grade 5 from Daniel Wright Junior High School to Half Day School.
    • District 103 retained the construction management services of Gilbane to manage the projects for the District.
    • Since that time, the architect firm, Wight and Co., brought schematic designs forward for the Board to review.
    • At the regular Board meeting on November 15, 2016, the Board approved construction contracts for additions at Sprague and Half Day School. These important projects will provide needed space at all three schools. Construction will begin as soon as weather permits and will be completed for the start of the 2017-2018 school year. In keeping with an identified focus on financial sustainability, these projects will be completed using available resources.
